About this book

If you are a voracious reader with an air of geek-vanity, you’ll claim to despise Chetan Bhagat and call him a ‘wannabe writer’. I do that too, even though I always end up reading his books.

When I picked up his latest book ‘One Indian Girl (a. It was dirt cheap; b. I wanted to read it before criticizing it), I wasn’t quite sure if I could manage to finish the book without getting irked by it. However, I literally binge-read it in 2 days and ended up begging for more.

The book

The book is about a highly successful I-Banker, Radhika Mehta, who is trying to find a balance between work and love in the man’s world. Brought up with a notion that her wheatish skin and over-education were men-repellent, she meets some incredible guys who convince her otherwise. However, they end up falling prey to their own male chauvinistic mentality that a girl cannot have it all and she’ll have to make some tough choices in order to be with them.
Throughout the book, Radhika is frantically running around and juggling everything on her plate: her soaring career, her messed-up love life, her marriage-obsessed mother, and her beliefs. Like every Indian girl of 2016, she is independent, and ambitious, and wants to settle down with a man who doesn’t ask her to choose. It’s not because the career is more important than family or vice versa, it’s because she knows that she can handle it all when the time will come.

Strangely,

I could see myself in Radhika. I laughed with her, cried with her, got angry with her, and felt helpless with her. Being a 25 years old who is earning a living in a big city is exhausting. Yet you put up a brave front and show up to work every day. When life gives you bumps like heartbreaks and the pressure of arranged marriage, it takes away a piece from you. Yet you pretend that it’s just another breakup or fight with your mom, and move on. Life is hard if you are a Radhika. Yet you fight like a warrior and make it look like there were zero casualties (even if you died a little).

In my opinion,

Chetan Bhagat did a commendable job in ‘One Indian Girl. I’m amazed at how he captured the real essence of a modern Indian girl and presented it in a totally relatable character of Radhika. He also managed to expose the inhibitions and insecurities of an Indian man in 2016 that have less to do with a woman’s beauty and more to do with her brain. Although I found the synopsis quite unconvincing and irritating, the book was a nice weekend read. Kudos!

Girls, read this book and know that you are the real deal. Never settle for anything less. Guys, read this book and know who you are dealing with. And grow up enough to embrace it.

On the other hand,

Radhika plunges into depression after having been rejected by Debashish. She takes up the transfer to Hong Kong. There she meets Neel. He is an interesting man to her but he is almost twenty years older than her and has a family which consists of two kids and a wife. As the affair advances, she faces the same rejection that she is too incompetent to start a family and all that stuff. Again depressed enough to move on to some other city. This time she is in London.
Radhika’s mother is consistently after her for marriage as her own reasons are correct. Radhika is in her thirties, looks nerd and simple, not attractive to turn men’s attention, etc.

Finally,

she comes on the terms of marriage with Brijesh Gulati, who works with Facebook. The marriage is to take place in Goa; all the arrangements have been made. The bride and groom arrive at the venue. Along with many guests, her two previous lovers also reach the marriage. Then, one by one both propose to her for marriage. She gets so confused about life partner options that she cancels the wedding.
After some months, Brijesh comes back to propose to her and is ready to accept her despite knowing about her past affairs. She too recognizes him as her true love and nods for the marriage.
One Indian Girl by Chetan Bhagat is a modern tale of a girl who has everything available at the touch of a button except a loving partner. Her quest is to seek out a loving soul mate, which she finds after routing through a couple of affairs. The narration is done from a female point of view. Though the story sounds predictable and simple, however, the implications it reflects can’t be taken seriously in the world of today where hedonism is placed first before love and other virtues.
One Indian Girl’s only motif, apart from putting up a spectacle loved by readers, is an inquiry into the mind of an Indian woman — not a girl, but a woman. It delves into the wonderfully weird narrator, Radhika, whose internal monologue is as comical as it is relatable. Through conversations with herself, she tells the story of being born into a family that always wanted a boy but settled for an overachieving, nerdy career woman who can’t find a groom for herself because she isn’t a “girl anymore”.

Through the narrator,

One Indian Girl explains why patriarchy thrives in India; not just because it is imposed by the men, but because these societal rules and restrictions are internalized by women. It is when Radhika seeks validation from her insecure boyfriend, who earns less than her, that the ugly scars of gender discrimination are visible.
The realization strikes again when the Goldman Sachs vice-president is told by her lover/married boss he did not see her as a “maternal” figure. Eventually, her past asks her to make a choice a lot of women would be familiar with: Pursuing a glittering career or living a fulfilling, homely life. Neither of her lovers recognizes that a woman could want, and have, both.
But there are bigger chinks in the protagonist that stream into the darker shadows of society. In the opening chapters, the narrator thinks to herself, “This is how we girls are. At times, we want to be wanted even when we deny it.”
Although the statement merely refers to the popular belief that women seek attention, it is a far cry from the lesson taught by Amitabh Bachchan’s resounding “She said No” in the movie Pink. It serves to tell us that stereotypes are dangerous, that all women may not enjoy shopping and not everyone wants a man to fawn over as she spurns him. To categorize a woman as attention-seeking is a lot like claiming all men are sexual predators. It is as nearly as ridiculous as Chetan Bhagat attempting to understand women’s psyche by getting himself waxed…
Like the indication that society needs to change, Radhika evolves from an under-confident geek to a decisive character living on her own terms. Her metamorphosis throws in another emerging pattern. Like Kangana Ranaut-starrer Queen, the woman has to move out of the confines of her country and out of the watchful gaze of the Indian society to discover herself. On the contrary, Radhika’s mother and sister — who remain in India — are deeply rooted in tradition, often justifying the system’s claustrophobic walls and following its rules mechanically.
There are, however, glaring misses in the story. While Radhika’s love life soars and topples, her professional growth only sees a straight upward trend without any blips. By zooming in on just one element of the character’s life, the author inadvertently simplifies her and relegates her issues to merely her personal life.
